ROBERT THOMPSON (Scottish, Early 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE STAGECOACH “DEFIANCE”. Oil on canvas landscape scene shows four horses pulling a colorful stagecoach laden with riders. They approach a sharp corner which is marked by a pole. The scene is under blue sky having pink and white clouds. Housed in what could be its original gilt molded wood frame. The original canvas having a signature and date of 1828 on the back. SIZE: 15″ x 20-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Provided to us indicates this was purchased on May 9, 1961 from Doris & Thurston Thacher (The Rip Van Dam Antique Shop), Hyde Park, NY. CONDITION: One small paint loss in sky, craquelure, having a wonderful old surface. 9-98803 (1,400-2,400)
