ALFRED BRYANT COPELAND (American/French, 1840-1909) ADVENTURE BOUND. Outstanding oil on canvas scene showing five mice led by a mouse holding a walking stick and hat with attached bag. They stop to see a fellow mouse who peers out of a hole in a gourd or loaf that is set on a brick with a green bottle which has been placed on a brick mantle with fireplace chimney behind. Signed lower right “Alfred B Copeland, Paris 1898″. Below is another name which is illegible with a date. Copeland often copied other artist’s work and notated this on his canvases. We assume this is the artist’s name of the work that he copied. Housed in a fine bronze colored modern frame. SIZE: 22-1/4″ x 27-1/4”. CONDITION: Thick varnish layer, tape patches on reverse, restored. Good. 9-95458 (5,000-8,000)
