*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1892 KRAG “SHORT” RIFLE. Cal. 30. SN 9769. This 1892 Krag is listed by the consignor as an experimental short rifle with a 24” bbl with the muzzle turned for a bayonet (similar to constabulary carbine). I personally have never seen or heard of one and have found absolutely no information pertaining to one being made but that is not saying that they didn’t. The government and the armory in particular were known to do a lot of experimenting to come up with new ideas. Rifle appears to be in fairly orig 1892 pattern with the only modifications being shortening of the front end. CONDITION: Receiver retains about 20-25% of its orig case mottling with a lot of silvering coming through. Sideplate is in approx. the same condition as receiver and is believed to be original. Magazine assembly is in better condition retaining 50-60% of its finish turning patina with its balance beginning to silver. Bolt shows oxidation from being stored with grease on it and should clean up to be fine, as will carriage assembly inside receiver. This appears to have been store for some time in grease. Bbl retains approx. 65-70% of its orig finish, turning plum, with rough bore but retains the flat surface on the front and not much blue at all where bbl was turned to accept bayonet. Ramrod bayonet appears to be a type 3 that has been shortened to correspond to the rifle. The correct, 2nd type, 92’ front band assembly exhibits approx. 50% of its finish turning plum. Middle band assembly is patina with just a little blue in protected areas. Trigger guard retains about 40% of its finish, though silvering and spotty. No trap buttplate has about 75% patina with silvering around the edges. Buttstock shows no evidence of a cartouche and is in pretty good shape with minor dings and mars throughout, but nothing any bigger than 3/16” around. Finger grooves are still reasonably sharp. Upper hand guard and orig 1892 rifle rear sight are in good condition with very few dents to the hand guard and no cracks exhibited and about 50% on the sight with some oxidation. All in all, this is a fine rifle that I just have information on. Edwards Collection 4-58498 BK63 (3,500-7,500)
