*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1898 KRAG RIFLE. Cal. 22. SN 477317. This is a very pretty example of a 98’ Krag in Cal. 22 that has all the proper features, with the exception of the cal. 22 marking on the receiver is not present. There are also 6 holes drilled in the buttstock in front of the trigger guard and below the magazine an sideplate, that appear to be about 1/8” around that I cannot explain. There is also what appears to be a through-hole on the upper hand guard going from left to right about 1/2 way between the rivets and the rear sight. CONDITION: Receiver retains approx. 98% of the arsenal mottled blue finish as does the sideplate. The sideplate screw however is buggered. The magazine cover retains about 95% blue with the balance turning patina. Inside of receiver and bolt assembly show almost no use. Bbl assembly shows 85-90% blue with some marks on the top that appear to be rack marks, as well as a couple of small patches of light rust. The “1901” rear sight assembly show about 90% with a fair amount of dried grease on it. The trigger guard assembly also shows about 90% or better bright blue with just a little oxidation around the screws. The middle band however shows no finish at all as if it never had any. The buttplate assembly shows approx. 85% of the blue with thinning on high edges. The buttstock is in good condition with the exception of the 6 holes spoke of earlier, with a very nice “1902” dated cartouche and proof mark. There is however a significant amount of coarse chipping on both sides of the rear swing swivel. Finger grooves are fairly sharp and the balance of the stock is in good condition with just minor scores and dings that do not detract from it very much. The top hand guard is in very good condition with a couple of minor dings in it and no cracks. It does however have the aforementioned hole drilled through it. Mechanically fine. Bore shows excellent with just a little dirt. 4-58741 BK74 (2,500-5,000)
