EDMUND HOTTENROTH (European, 1804-1889) VIEW NEAR ZENZANO. Oil on canvas panoramic scene shows a shepherd leading his flock to a stream with small pool. The stream cascades in foreground over rocks next to a large tree. Sunlight shines on a dirt path with mother and child walking toward shepherd. A large farm building is seen on top of hill and a town is seen amongst hills in background. Large expanse of blue sky with white clouds. Signed lower left “E. Hottenroth, Rom 1856”. Housed in a magnificent antique wide gesso decorated frame. Large paper label to back affixed to the canvas of back with the scenes locations “View of the hills of Albano? The little town Zenzano. Woods of cork trees and a farm at the right hand …”. Inscribed on back of canvas “E. Corning #11”. PROVENANCE: Estate of Maria M. Viveiros, New Bedford, Massachusetts. SIZE: 39” x 54”. CONDITION: Craquelure, surface dirt with scratches in sky. Otherwise very good. 9-28795 (1000-1500)
