SPRINGFIELD ARMORY HOSPITAL CORP MACHETE. Short machete with 12” curved heavy blade with round point that is 2-1/2” at widest point tapering down to 1-5/16” at the ricasso. It has “S” shaped brass handguard and 2-pc walnut grips with finger grooves and small brass pommel cap. The left side of the blade is marked “SA” with flaming bomb and the date 1914. The right side of the blade is marked “U.S.” with the SN 40095. It is accompanied by its original brass and leather sheath, marked on the back with a 1912 date and Rock Island proofs. It has the original brass throat and blued steel Krag style belt hanger. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Blade retains generous amounts of its original arsenal finish with scattered light discoloration. Handle has a couple of gouges with minor nicks and dings. Sheath retains most of its original brown finish with a few nicks, scratches and dings and a little wear at the toe. Brass has a fine mellow patina and the hanger most of its bright blue with minor rust spots. 4-50859 JR348 (500-1,000)
