RARE REMINGTON FRONTIER MODEL KEENE BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Standard grade military rifle with 24-1/2” rnd bbl, full magazine, dovetail front sight with Remington’s ladder rear sight. Receiver has the rare “U.S.I.D.” (U.S. Interior Department), also known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and has that marking on left side of receiver with number “301”. Receiver ring has the arrow stamp of the Indian Police and Indian Scouts and a large “P” proof and “W.W.K.” inspector mark. Left side of receiver ring & left side of bbl have “H.N.” sub-inspector marks for Henry Nettleton. The left side of wrist has a clear Henry Nettleton “HN” cartouche in an oval. Bottom of stock and forend cap have sling swivels. An estimated only 620-800 of these rare rifles were produced in 1880-1881. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 85-90% thinning orig blue, strong & bright in sheltered areas. Magazine tube retains 90-92% strong orig blue with a couple of thin spots. Receiver retains about 80% strong orig blue turning brown over receiver ring. Stock has a repaired crack in wrist with a hairline back of top tang and overall retains a fine, hand rubbed patina with a gouge in the butt and another in the wrist with minor handling & use marks elsewhere.
