SPRINGFIELD/MEACHAM SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 40/65. SN 21120. 30” oct bbl. These rifles were advertised by E. C. Meacham & Co. of St. Louis in their catalogues staring in 1879. They must have had surplus or condemned actions, as the Model 1873 was still in service at that time. The bbls were made by William Davenport. Sights are Sharps. Rear sight on this one is of the buckhorn or western type, designed for Sharps by J. P. Lower of Denver. The front sight has large German silver blade. Wrist and forearm are coarsely checkered. The Schnabel forearm tip has ebony insert. The bbl band spring inlet in forearm has been filled. Sliding trapdoor in buttplate. Rear sight is standard ski jump type marked “R” on left side. Front sight is folding Beech type. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina overall with widely scattered light pitting, mostly on buttplate. Action is fine. Bore is good with light pitting.
