PRESENTATION WINCHESTER 1873 1ST MODEL LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal 44-40. SN 23988. Standard grade rifle with 24-1/4” oct bbl, full magazine, homemade front sight blade and early semi buckhorn rear sight that was filed flat during the period of use. It has a mortised, impressed thumbprint dust cover and uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent steel buttplate with trap. The left side of the buttstock is inlaid with a 2-5/8” oval silver plate inscribed “Warren W Morhous/Sardncle Lakes/Sept. 22/77”. Accompanying is a Cody Firearms letter identifying this gun and showing shipment on August 23, 1877, order number 9846. CONDITION: Fair to good. Bbl and magazine tube retain 30-40% thin original blue nixed with plum patina. Receiver retains 35-40% thin original blue with cleaned areas and some very fine light surface pitting. Wood is sound and retains most of an old sanded refinish with numerous small nicks, scratches, and dings. Strong bore with fine dark pitting. Lever screw is battered. 4-50328 JR185 (3,500-5,500)
