CARTRIDGE BLOCK FOR METCALF LOADING DEVICE. Wood block holds 8 cartridges. Reverse side, which has mounting lugs, is marked on paper seal “8 RIFLE – BALL / Caliber .45. 70Grains Musket Powder. / Put up at Springfield Armory, Feby.1876”. The opposite side is marked “CARTRIDGES / Bullet, .405 Grains. / Made at Frankford Arsenal June.1875”. Tear string is still in place. CONDITION: Label is mostly oil-stained and is difficult to read. There are chips to the varnish coating on the tear string end. Lower half of seal has been torn, and there are chips on edge of upper seal, which has compression cracks, but has not been opened.
