ELLIS WILSON (American, 1900-) “YOUNG MOTHER”. Oil on wood panel shows black woman and child standing in front of fruit trees. The trees act as solid green background and have clusters of red fruit. Top 3” shows light blue sky. Woman wears pink head wrap and blouse. Lack of facial features on both woman and child. Signed lower right “Ellis Wilson”. Housed in a gray painted wood frame with white liner. Tacked label on reverse, taped partial envelope indicating provenance is Mrs. James W. Chandler of Herrods Creek, Kentucky. Wilson, a black artist who has come into the national spotlight with his retrospective exhibit outlining his life and art. For more information visit www.ket.org/content/elliswilson/gallery. Research indicates this painting was probably done in one of his visits to Haiti or Jamaica where he painted people in their natural surroundings. SIZE: 22-1/2” x 14-1/2”.
