*INTERESTING L.C. SMITH A-2 GRADE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN. SN 6129. Cal. 12 ga. 30″ “Sir Joseph Whitworth Steel” bbls with tapered, hand filed concave rib with single ivory sighting bead, 3″ chambers, FULL / FULL choked, ejectors and double triggers. Right bbl at chamber area is marked “Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel.” and left bbl “Made to Order by the Hunter Arms Co. Fulton, N.Y.”. Rib has engraved gold band and 2″ of scroll engraving. There is an 1-3/4″ wedge of scroll engraving on each bbl, at chambers and 1-1/2″ at muzzles. Receiver is engraved with tight foliate arabesque scroll mixed with flowers and oak leaves and a small vignette of a woodcock on left sideplate. Front left side of receiver is an engraved oval with a pointing setter. Right sideplate has similar engraving with small vignette of Bob White quail and an oval with a pointing pointer in front right side. Ribbed and floral engraved fences with stippled background and foliate arabesque scroll across top and bottom. Made without a safety. Trigger guard is engraved “A.W. Money”, presumably for Capt. Albert W. Money noted pigeon shooter and author of the book “Pigeon Shooting”. Mounted with replacement stock of nicely figured walnut with fine checkered round knob pistol grip, pachmayr brown vented pad, checkered splintered forend with banjo latch and black ebony tip insert. Bore diameter: left – .728, right – .728. Bore restrictions: left – .034, right – .035. Wall thickness: left – .033, right – .031. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 7 lbs. 14 oz. LOP 14-7/8″. Accompanied with Cody Firearm Museum fact sheet identifying as A-2, 12 gauge, 30″ bbls, finished July 3, 1901. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 85-90% blue with minor wear at chambers and muzzles, thinning through forend area with some minor shallow pitting on bottom at tip of forend and a few minor nicks and scratches. Receiver is mostly a silver/gray hardening color blended with some brown patina across bottom and some minor surface oxidation on rear portion of rear sideplate. Stock is sound with slightly flat checkering, a few minor scratches and a couple of dents, and 90% of its varnish finish. Recoil pad is slightly proud of wood. Toe line has blank initial shield and an old repair. Forend is sound with considerably worn checkering, nicks and dings and a hand worn patina finish. Mechanics are crisp with strong ejectors, shiny bores with a couple of minor shallow pits in right bbl. 4-35818 BDT171 (7,500-12,500)
