MARIANO JOSE MARIA BERNARDO FORTUNY y CARBO (Spanish, 1838-1874) GIRL READING. Oil on canvas scene shows a young woman seated on stone bench with flowers beside. She wears a fancy summer dress and is reading from a folded paper or book. Green trees serve as backdrop. Signed lower left illegibly. Housed in a gilt antique French frame with period artist tag “Fortuny”. The reverse of canvas has an old period title which appears to say “enonce oct”. The medial stretcher has a red wax seal. SIZE: 18-1/4” x 15-1/4”. CONDITION: Inpainted red flowers and some masking varnish. There is a separation in the canvas around the bottom of the flowers and some chipping to left hand corner, craquelure. Otherwise good. 9-28971 (4000-6000)
