EXTREMELY RARE & COLORFUL WINCHESTER STAR CHRISTMAS SHOT SHELL 100 BOX. One of the rarest and most desirable shot shell boxes, only about three examples are known. Three years ago the world record for a shot shell box was established by an identical example from the Dr. James McCleery collection that realized $39,100. Our box is full, 8-3/16” square X 2-11/16” high. The top of the box is a buff colored background with blue lettering “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.” and the picture of a dog holding a dead quail. The upper right corner has a gold colored arabesque pattern with the panel printed “NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” The bottom 1/3 of the box has a rectangular panel imprinted in multi-color “100 WATER PROOFED. STAR PAPER SHOT SHELLS” and the bottom right corner is printed “Boston Lithographing Co., / New Haven, Conn”. The front edge has a large gold star over-printed “STAR” with a picture of a black & brass shotshell and “NO. 12”. Also indicates they are 2-5/8” long. The left side is a detailed scene of a hunter in a sneak boat in a marsh scene shooting ducks. The back side is a duplicate of the front. The right side is a scene of two dogs in a hilly field scene with one lying and one sitting beside a shotgun propped in a tree branch with a hunting bag and several dead birds. The bottom is kraft colored paper and is stamped in purple ink “9 18 89”. CONDITION: Very good. Colors are strong with some light foxing and soil. Right edge of the top has a wrinkle and short tear that extends down the right side. Upper left corner has a small damage not affecting the image. Otherwise it has simple normal light use with slightly chipped edges and fuzzed corners with a small rub or two. Bottom of the box has a couple of small punctures and one edge has a long tear and the opposite edge a smaller tear, neither of which have any losses of material. Colors are vivid and bright and it is basically an intact box. Empty primed cartridges are all crisp with only light oxidation with bright paper and copper primers. 4-50876 JR1059 (25,000-30,000)
