*SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903 RIFLE. Cal. 30-03. SN 103577. 24” bbl. 1905 transition gun with a twist. This gun has what is called a Gardiner safety device which was patented “US Patent 911683 Patented 9 Feb 1909”. The finger grooves in the stock were removed from this gun with spring loaded sliding grasping grooves replacing them. This was to work a rod that connected to the sear assembly so that this gun could not be cocked or fired without pulling on the grasping grooves. The Gardiner safety patent information is relief milled into the left side of the wood directly below the receiver. Also cartouche area is milled out as to show how the safety works. CONDITION: Finish on bbl and receiver is 90-95%. Flat-top hand guard is in excellent condition. Stock is good as modified with a slight split just about the added grasping grooves on both sides. Bands retain 75-80% of the blue. Triggerguard and floorplate are 60% finished. Bore is bright but with very little rifling left as to this safety system must have been significantly tested. Smooth buttplate has finish worn. Mechanically sound. A unique addition for the advanced ’03 collector. 4-57783 (7,500-12,500)
