*VERY UNUSUAL CONVERTED COLT 3RD GENERATION SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. SN SA38603. Cal. 30 M1 Carbine. Blue & color case hardened with 10″ bbl that has 7 lands & grooves, slightly thinned front sight and 1-line block letter address with caliber marking lightly rolled on left side. Bottom of bbl has five digits of SN under ejector rod housing with a small “S” just below the ejector rod housing stud. Left side of frame has 2-line 3-patent dates and the rampant Colt. Mounted with 2nd Generation Colt eagle grips numbered to this revolver. SN was observed in usual place on bottom of frame, hand stamped on left side of front & back straps under grip, around rear face of cyl with an “S” as is found on bottom of bbl. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter which identifies this SN as having been shipped in caliber 357 Magnum with 4-3/4″ bbl, blue & color case hardened and type of stocks not listed to Kuntz Hardware, Des Moines, IA in 1980. Given that this was not a cataloged caliber it seems likely that the conversion was done outside the factory, however it is the opinion of this cataloger, having seen other non-cataloged calibers in Colts, that if this conversion was not done at Colt, it almost certainly was by someone with access to the Colt facilities. The frame, trigger guard & back strap are refinished in factory style with factory type case colors and blue. The bbl, cyl & ejector rod housing are not refinished and all have orig Colt factory style blue. The frame has been dressed down during the refinish and almost certainly the patent dates & rampant Colt re-rolled. Accompanied by a sales receipt from noted CA dealer Harrison Carroll listing the gun as a .30 Carbine w/ factory documents. Also accompanied by a notarized statement dated Aug. 23, 2010, from Robert Carradine, brother of David Carradine, certifying that “This Colt Single Action Army, serial number SA38603, was a gift to my brother David from me in 1988. The unusual caliber of .30 Carbine appealed to him due to his Army days.” PROVENANCE: From the private collection of the late actor, David Carradine. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, all matching as noted above. Bbl, cyl & ejector rod housing retain virtually all of their orig factory blue with a couple of small scratches on right side of bbl. Frame retains about all of its strong, bright, factory type, case colors, brilliant in sheltered areas. Hammer retains bright polish on both sides and most of its orig blue on top & rear edges. Trigger guard & back strap retain most of their refinished blue, slightly purple on front strap & trigger guard. Grips are crisp with no discernible flaws. Hammer is not solid in safety notch, otherwise mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-40809 JR309 (3,000-5,000)
