*MATCHED PAIR OF 3D GENERATION COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVERS AND A HUGE LOT OF DOCUMENTATION SUPPORTING THEIR OWNERSHIP AND USE BY KEVIN COSTNER IN THE MOVIE “SILVERADO”. SN SA26317 & SA51058. Cal. 45 Colt. Revolvers are nearly identical with nickel finish, 4-3/4″ bbls, slightly altered front sights, one line block letter addresses with model and caliber markings on the left side. They have two-line, 3 patent dates on the left side of the frame with the Rampant Colt. They are mounted with faux pearl grips with gold Colt medallions. These revolvers were altered and tuned by famous movie fast-draw artist and shooting instructor Arvo Ojala. In addition to having the action tuned and smoothed with very light trigger pull, the hammer spurs have been altered to left and right offsets with completely smooth spurs. Consignor purchased this pair of revolvers directly from Mr. Ojala in 1987 when he was raising money for another project, and has maintained them in his personal collection until they were consigned to this auction. Along with the revolvers, consignor also purchased from Mr. Ojala his personal double-holster fast-draw buscadero rig that he had created for himself under his own patent and actually wore on the set while filming the movie “Silverado”, while instructing the actors in the art of fast draw and shooting. The rig consists of a double-layered belt of heavy leather about 37″ long with sewn-on tongue and buckle billets which contain a custom Arvo Ojala brass buckle SN 202. The holster drops contain left and right hand fast draw holsters made of the same heavy leather with hammer thongs & leg latigos. The belt is marked in two places on the inside and the holsters one place on the inside with Mr. Ojala’s maker’s cartouche. The back center of the belt is mounted with twenty 44/45 caliber cartridge loops containing nickeled .45 Colt cartridges. The inside center of the belt is carved in raised brown-stained letters, “ARVO OJALA”. Consignor stated that Mr. Ojala told him he carved this rig with his name on the inside in this manner because in almost every movie he worked someone would steal his belt and holster rig and with this one it was easily identified and retrieved. The original rig used by Mr. Costner in the movie is, reportedly, on display at the Midnight Star Saloon and Casino in Deadwood, South Dakota, and are displayed with prop guns, along with many of the treasures from this and his other movies. This pair of Colts, belt and holster rig, along with much of the accompanying material was displayed in the “Colt and Its Collectors” exhibition at the Cody Firearms Museum, sponsored by The Colt Collectors Association, May through October 2003 and are now accompanied by two cards of “label copy” from that exhibit. The pair of revolvers, belt and holster rig are pictured in color on page 306 of the book, Colt and Its Collectors, Andrus, et al. On page 391 of the referenced publication, is the autographed picture of the four main stars from the movie, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Kevin Klein and Danny Glover. A copy of the referenced publication accompanies this lot. Also accompanying is a tremendous volume of “Silverado” related materials including a copy of the script marked “FINAL DRAFT, OCTOBER 5, 1984”. In addition, there is a wonderful original cardboard theater lobby die cut that is complete with the attachment; a large framed diorama of the color photograph of the four primary stars, a small lobby sheet identical to the above die cut and autographs of the four main male stars along with autographs of six of the other stars including Lynn Whitfield, Roseanne Arquette and four others; a framed, notarized, original letter on Arvo Ojala letterhead and signed by Mr. Ojala wherein he states that these revolvers, identified by SN, were “specially customized by me for fast draw” and “also, this pair of guns was used by Kevin Costner to do his fast and fancy shooting in the film”. The letter additionally states “I used this black customized double gun rig coaching Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn and Kevin Klein for the movie”. The display also has a black & white photograph from a scene on the movie set with Kevin Costner in the act of shooting this pair of revolvers, with Kevin Klein in the right background and Arvo Ojala in the left background, wearing the previously described belt and holster rig. Also accompanying is an original paper lobby poster for the movie that is 41″h x 27″w, in full color with the four main male stars on horseback with Kevin Costner brandishing one of these revolvers in his left hand. Additionally accompanying are four black & white photographs from various scenes in the movie, three of which are action scenes and one of the four main male actors posing together. There is a fifth framed photograph of just Mr. Costner in his movie costume with fringed buckskin jacket, hat and bandanna wearing his movie gun rig with the grip of one of these revolvers visible and, more importantly, is the color photograph of the four main male stars which was published in the previously referenced publication and depicts the four main male stars in their movie costumes with each having autographed over their images. Additionally there is a VHS cassette of the movie and finally, two craft-colored cardboard boxes for the revolvers. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a comprehensive accumulation of materials and two unusual hand-tuned and altered for fast draw single action Colts from a very famous movie used by a very famous actor. CONDITION: Revolvers are extremely fine, retaining virtually all of their fine nickel finish. Grips are sound and clean with a minor handling and use scratch on the left side of one revolver.
