*FRANCOTTE MODEL X BOXLOCK EJECTOR HEAVY GAME GUN. SN 38354. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. X-Grade was used by V L & D between 1902 and 1910. It was replaced by the designation of 14 Grade in 1910. This gun was imported in 1904, and has 30″ dovetailed steel barrels with concave matted game rib with doll’s head and crossbolt extension. Tops of bbls are engraved “Von Lengerke & Detmold” and “U. S. Agents, New York”. Bbl flats are stamped with Belgian nitro proofs, “Francotte Choke Bore”, and A F makers mark. Bottoms of bbls have “Seimens Martin Steel” in circular logos, choke information “2-3/4”, SN, and other manufacturing numbers. Boxlock action features automatic safety (“S” inlaid in gold, and visible through hole in long safety slide when in safe position), side clips and crossbolt third fastener. Action has approximately 60% coverage of simple closed scroll and each side is engraved “A. Francotte Maker & Patentee Liege Belgium”. Fences are engraved with semi-relief stylized oak leaf and acorn pattern. Trigger guard has scroll on bow, and SN on tang. Slightly figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/16″ over open sided red pad, and features extremely fine, greater than 40 LPI, checkered side panels with chip carved border. Grip checkering is at approximately 30 LPI with three line border. There is a silver circle inlaid on bottom of grip engraved “R. I. H. 1908″. Factory records indicate this gun was sold to R. I. Hopper. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.731, right -.729. Bore restrictions: left -.032, right -.020. Wall thickness: left -.033, right -.036. Drop at heel: 3″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 7 lbs. 8.6 oz, LOP 14-5/16”. PROVENANCE: Letter from Griffin & Howe with ledger entries and history. CONDITION: Fair to good. Bbls retain a considerable amount of their original finish, but are mostly blue-brown. Action is mostly silver gray with traces of color in protected areas. Stocks have not been refinished, but are quite worn and show years of use. There are a number of slivers of wood missing along edges of forend. Checkering is worn smooth in places. Action is slightly loose and off face, and needs a re-joint. Ejectors need work. Right ejector does not fire, and left ejector is “live”. Bores are very fine, bright and shiny, with some slight frosting. 4-40035 MGM33 (1,500-2,500)
