*UNUSUAL FATHER AND SON PAIR OF J. P. SAUER NO. 180 BOXLOCK EJECTOR GAME GUNS WITH CASE. SN 197620/ 197622. (ca. 1914) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 26″ Shoe lump barrels with raised matted concave game ribs and crossbolt extensions are engraved “J. P. Sauer & Son.” on top of each bbl. Breech ends are engraved “Fluid – Steel Krupp – Essen”. Bbl flats are stamped with German imperial proofs for 12 ga. with a crown, “Prussia”, and Sauer caveman logos. Bottoms of left bbls are stamped with SNs. Case hardened boxlock actions feature automatic safeties (“Safe” relief engraved) and double triggers. Actions are engraved with stamped scroll borders with highlights of scroll, as is usual for this grade. Floorplates have unusual (special ordered?) engravings of mallard flushing from marsh on gun no. 197620, and retriever fetching duck on gun no. 197622. “J. P. Sauer & Son.” is engraved on each side of actions. Case hardened matching trigger guards have SNs on tangs. Well matched, lightly streaked, and somewhat figured European walnut semi-pistol grip buttstocks measure 14-3/4″ over leather covered pads, and feature finely checkered inset side panels, 24 LPI checkering with line borders, and silver ovals on toe lines, one engraved “F.H.B.” and the other “F. H. B. Jr”. Matching splinter ejector forends have small Schnabel tips, and Deeley fasteners. Gun no. 197620: Bore diameter: left -.716, right -.717. Bore restrictions: left -.027, right -.004. Wall thickness: left -.035, right -.038. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 6 lbs. 13 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. Gun no. 197622: Bore diameter: left -.717., right -.716. Bore restrictions: left -.028, right -.007. Wall thickness: left -.038, right -.037. Drop at heel: 2-3/4″, drop at comb: 1-13/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 13 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. Leather Abercrombie and Fitch marked two-compartment, toe under two-gun case, with snap divider is lined in burgundy cloth, and contains 3-pc nickel-plated and rosewood unmarked BGI type cleaning rod, CSMC marked square oil bottle, 12 ga. pull-through cleaning brush, and some Abercrombie and Fitch cleaning patches. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain nearly all of their original blue, with some minor marks, silvering, and staining. Actions retain 40-50% original case color, gun no. 197622 considerably stronger with 60-70%. Stocks retain most of their original rubbed oil finish with numerous marks, light scratches, and compressions. Gun no. 197620 shows considerable wear of sharp edges on side panels. Gun no. 197620 is very slightly loose, 197622 is tight and on face. Ejectors are in time. Bores are excellent. Just the slightest bit of frosting at breech ends of gun 197622. Case is fine. Exterior leather is beginning to craze, and has numerous rubs. Two leather corners have detached and are in case. Interior cloth is very fine, partitions are tight.
