OUTSTANDING PAIR OF ANTIQUE EUROPEAN FIELD ARTILLERY PIECES. Beautiful consecutive numbered pair of bronze barreled cannons, 65″ long, including the cascabel with a 3-3/4″ bore, 3″ trunnions & a 3″ cascabel. The wheels are 60″ in diameter turned out as is proper for field artillery pieces. The axles are 78″ maximum width with a 96″ trail and the overall length from muzzle to the end of the trail is 130″. The bbls are beautifully cast with a fine flared muzzle, 7-3/4″ in diameter. The tops of the bbls have a variety of markings including a large crown over a circle which contains some intertwined initials with a crest at the bottom. Incorporated in the perimeter of the circle is the Latin inscription “NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET”. Just below that is a raised ring with the inscription “F M EARDLE WILMOT 1855” with another ring bearing the serial numbers “5326” on one and “5327” on the other. Toward the rear end of each bbl is a large crest surmounted with a crown above a ribbon which has the inscription “DIEU ET MOR DROIT”. There is another raised ring with the Roman numerals “MMXVII”. The consignor states that he has owned this pair of cannons for a number of years, and when he purchased them the wheels were completely deteriorated so he had them professionally replaced to exact original specs and using the original iron, which cost $75 over 20 years ago. The balance of the major components are all original including the axle and trail, elevation screw and all other parts including the ammunition boxes. The box lids however, have new copper covers. CONDITION: Extremely fine, the bbls retain a wonderful green verdigris patina with some minor staining on one bbl. The wood is all sound with a wonderful aged patina except for the wheels which are, as previously reported, new. One elevation screw is a little stiff, otherwise these cannons appear to be in good firing order. A truly magnificent pair worthy of even the most advanced collection. They are museum pieces and probably saw action during the Civil War. 4-53720 JR1016 (75,000-125,000)
