EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 POSITIVE CAM TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. SN 415528. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. Only 100 of these rifles were made, all in 1888. These are easily identified by the screw showing on the right side of the breechblock. This screw was needed to hold the firing pin in place after the bottom of the breechblock was altered to allow a movable breechblock lock. When the lever is lifted, the lock is moved to the left by a cam inside the block. This pulls the shoulder on the inside of the lever out of the notch in the side of the receiver, allowing the block to be opened. Breechblock is marked “U.S / MODEL / 1888”. Lockplate has standard markings. “SWP” cartouche is also dated “1888”. CONDITION: Near excellent. 90% blue mixed with light surface rust and pitting on bbl, lockplate, buttplate, and bbl bands. Bright casehardening colors on breechblock, brilliant on inside and on tang. Stock has minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. 4-59047 FS692 (10,000-15,000)
