J.D. MORITZ’ SOHN SCHUETZEN RIFLE. SN 3774. Cal. 8.15X46R. Beautiful System Stahl Martini style Schuetzen rifle with 30-1/2″ oct bbl, ramp mounted winged pin front sight with removable pin with rear portion of top flat flared as an open sight dovetail and the rear of receiver mounted with an integral, removable large diopter, key adjustable rear sight. Top flat of bbl is inlaid in silver “J.D. MORITZ’ SOHN in LEIPZIG.” Top left flat is inlaid in silver “GUSS=” and the right side “STAHL.”. Muzzle is engraved in foliate & floral patterns. Receiver end of bbl has a wide inlaid silver band and a narrow inlaid silver band scalloped around the bbl flats. The heavy Martini style action has rounded contoured front edge and rounded bottom edges with tapered finger rest lever and dbl set triggers. Rear edge of receiver is scalloped with the aforementioned sight and it has a quick detachable breech block pin. Bottom of bbl is ovoid shaped with a narrow groove on the very bottom with two iron guides containing a tiny wooden ramrod that is partially broken. Rear guide is mounted with a European sling swivel with corresponding swivel in buttstock. Mounted with nicely figured European walnut with fleur-de-lis carved & checkered forearm with raised seashell carved side panels and a semi-Schuetzen buttstock with matching raised carved side panels. It has checkered wrist with foliate carvings, a deep Schuetzen style cheekpiece and foliate & floral carvings behind the cheekpiece. Right side of wrist has extended, intertwined foliate carvings. Receiver, breech block, lever, upper & lower tang and forend iron along with buttplate tang are nicely engraved in foliate arabesque patterns. CONDITION: Fine plus. Bbl retains about 95% strong orig blue with sharp edge wear. Receiver, lever, upper & lower tangs and buttplate are mostly silvered case colors with moderately faded case colors on rear of breech block and around receiver sight base. Stock has a few minor chips at receiver, otherwise wood is sound and retains most of a fine professionally restored hand rubbed oil finish. Ramrod as stated above.
