GEORGE GIBBS LONG RANGE CREEDMOOR PERCUSSION RIFLE. SN 8847. Cal .461. (Groove diameter .474) 35″ Blued steel round bbl with Rigby flats is engraved “George Gibbs, 29, Corn Street, Bristol.” on top between bbl mounted rear sight and top flat, which is engraved “Metford’s Patent, 650.” Vernier adjustable rear bbl sight has gold line Halford type ladder with graduations to 1000 yards. Level housing is attached to rear. Windage adjustable front sight has adjustment markings on platinum inset bands and square sheet metal hood with unusual adjustable aperture. Top front of bbl has stud for mounting false muzzle, which is present, and is rifled to match bore. It is also marked “George Gibbs Bristol” and “650” at muzzle end. Bottom of bbl is marked with Birmingham proofs for 48 bore, “650”, and Gibbs SN 8847. Breech plug is marked with both numbers on hook, is nicely filed with platinum “blow-out”, and has fine scroll engraving. Top flat has Metford logo. Breech iron has well filed fence and front position vernier sight mount in tang. Front action lock has serpentine hammer with stylized dolphin head. All metal has fine scroll engraving. Lock plate is engraved “George Gibbs.” Case hardened trigger plate has scroll engraved front termination. Trigger is finely checkered, and steel trigger guard has scroll engraving and SN. Nicely marbleized and fiddle figured dark European walnut pistol grip stock measures 14″ over checkered horn buttplate, and features vacant gold oval, horn grip cap and forend tip, flattop checkering of grip and forend at approx 22 LPI with mullered borders. Bbl attaches to stock with side nail through engraved steel ovoid escutcheons with circular ends. 6″ Vernier rear sight is mounted in back position engraved steel mount at heel. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Excellent, as refinished. Case hardened parts show virtually all their color with engraving slightly washed. Blued parts show virtually all of their blue, again with engraving slightly washed. Stock retains virtually all of its professionally done oil finish with edges of wood kept sharp. There are a few minor handling marks, and dings, from use. Checkering has been nicely re-cut. Bore is very good with sharp rifling, but frosted. Rear bbl sight has had vernier screw replaced, and level bubble is missing. Lock is crisp. Vernier back sight has some areas of minor pitting. This is a fine usable example of a very scarce rifle. 4-39119 MGM1 (6,000-10,000)
