SCARCE WHITWORTH RIFLE COMPANY PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 259. Cal. 451. (Groove diameter .481). 30″ Round steel bbl with Rigby flats has typical Whitworth hexagonal rifling. Top of bbl is engraved “Whitworth. Patent.” Finely filed Rigby flats have floral scroll termination to the top flat. Rear sight has 2 folding leaves with gold lines and folding ladder sight to 1000 yards. Platinum bead front sight is dovetailed through front of bbl. Bottom of bbl is stamped with Birmingham proofs for 52 bore, and SN. Very finely filed breech plug has platinum “blow out,” and recumbent stag engraved on top flat. SN is on hook. Breech iron has very well executed relief shaded scroll engraving. Front action lock has serpentine hammer relief engraved with coiled dragon, stylized eagle, and scroll. Lockplate has matching scroll, front sliding safety lock, and is marked “Whitworth Patent”. Trigger plate has scroll engraved stylized pineapple. Pistol grip type steel trigger guard has large open scroll engraving, checkered grip area, and SN at tang. Nicely streaked and lightly figured European walnut stock measures 14-1/4″ over long tang engraved steel buttplate. Right side of butt with a round sprung patchbox has scroll engraved border, and running stag beset by hound on cover. There is a vacant silver oval, and engraved steel sling button on toe line. Checkering is about 20 LPI with mullered borders. Shaped forend tip is of horn. Bbl fastens by side nail through engraved steel oval escutcheons. There is no provision for a ramrod. Mahogany case has brass central medallion in lid, and pivoting hook closures, is lined with green cloth with original Whitworth Rifle Company label. SN is in India ink on rear wood portion of lid. There are four compartments with lids that have bone knobs. There is also a removable mahogany compartment with sliding cover. Accessories include serial numbered brass Davis type mold, that casts a .865 inch long .455 diameter bullet with deep hollow base; Dixon marked pewter oil bottle; Sykes patent leather covered and nickel plated powder flask; walnut handled nipple wrench; and ebony loading rod. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Case hardened parts are smooth mottled gray with traces of color in protected areas of lockplate and breech iron. Bbl retains considerable amount of original blue, in mottled pattern showing grain of steel. Bore is fine, slightly frosted. Rear sight ladder slide is missing. Stock shows mixture of old and added finish with some repairs around side nail escutcheon on left side of forend. There’s an area approx. 2-1/2″ x 1-1/4″ at heel where well matching piece of wood has been inset, probably to repair knot or void, found in the making. New finish has been added in this area. There’s some moth damage to left side of forend tip. Case is fine with most of its original varnish, with area at back where some insect damage has been filled with shellac. There are some repaired cracks on rear of lid. Interior cloth is good with some slight staining. Some partitions are a bit loose but intact. Label shows some foxing, stains from contact with gun, and a few missing bits. Accessories are fine. Cracks and chips in leather of powder flask.
