*SCARCE A. H. FOX XE GRADE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN. SN 300786. Cal. 16 ga. 26″ Chromox Fluid Steel bbls with tapered, matted, concave rib & sgl silver sighting bead, 2-1/2″ chambers, choked FULL / FULL, dbl triggers & ejectors. Chamber areas have nearly 2″ wedge of bold oak leaf engraving. Right bbl is marked “CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL” and left “Made By A. H. Fox Gun Co. Phila. PA. U.S.A.”. The rebated X grade receiver has bold oak leaves surrounding an oval with “Ansley H. Fox” & 2 flying ducks on left and “Ansley H. Fox” & 2 flying quail on right. Bold leaf pattern on trigger plate & a fox gazing up in a meadow scene with hills in background on bottom of receiver. Mounted in dark “streaky” walnut with checkered side panels, checkered pistol grip with hard rubber grip cap, and squashed & hardened Silvers recoil pad. Checkered splinter forend with Schnable ebony tip insert. Bore diameter: left -.658, right -.659. Bore restrictions: left -.023, right -.019. Wall thickness: left -.028, right -.030. Drop at heel: 2-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 4 oz. LOP 14-3/8″. Accompanied by Roe S. Clark letter identifying this gun as XE 16 ga. with 26″ bbls, chokes not listed, full pistol grip with LOP 14-1/2″, drop at heel 2-7/8″, equipped with No. 4 bbls, weighs 6 lbs. 4 oz. Gun was shipped to E. K. Tryon, Philadelphia, Sept. 26, 1926. Gun is accompanied by a vintage leg-of-mutton case. PROVENANCE: The David Herrmann Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 85% orig blue with thinning at muzzle, some thinning areas from carry in forearm area and a few minor scuffs & scratches. Receiver is sharp and mostly a silver hardening color with some traces of case color in protected areas. Trigger guard has 50% orig blue mixed with brown patina. Stock is solid with very minor chip behind top tang, with very nice checkering & a very nice hand-worn patina finish with only a few nicks & scratches. Forend is sound with good checkering & warm hand-worn patina finish. Mechanics are crisp, ejectors work fine, nice shiny bores. 4-35247 BDT18 (10,000-15,000)
