*EYE-CATCHING A. H. FOX XE GRADE SIDE-BY-SIDE SHOTGUN. SN 200647. Cal. 20 ga. 28″ Krupp Fluid Steel bbls with tapered, matted, concave rib with dual Lyman sighting beads, 2-1/2″ chambers, choked MOD / FULL with dbl triggers & ejectors. Chamber areas have nearly a 2″ wedge of oak leaf engraving. Right bbl is marked “KRUPP FLUID STEEL MADE BY” and on left “A. H. Fox Gun Co. Phila. PA.”. The X grade receiver is engraved with bold leafy pattern with shaded background around oval with “Ansley H. Fox” & 2 ducks in flight on left and “Ansley H. Fox” & 2 quail in flight on right. Trigger plate is a bold leaf-and-vine pattern with shaded background & oval with fox in wooded scene on bottom of receiver. Mounted with select “streaky” walnut with checkered side panels, ribbon checkered pistol grip, hard rubber grip cap & Silvers recoil pad. Ribbon checkered splinter forend with ebony tip insert & engraved ejector button. Bore diameter: left -.615, right -.615. Bore restrictions: left -.025, right -.010. Wall thickness: left -.017, right -.019. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 5 lbs. 9 oz. LOP 14-1/4″. Accompanied by Roe S. Clark letter identifying this as an XE 20 ga. with 28″ bbls, choked MOD / FULL, full pistol grip, a pull of 14-1/4″, with 1-1/2″ drop at comb & 2-5/8″ at heel. Gun was fitted with Silvers recoil pad & Lyman sights. There is note on front of card: “Select handsome stock, nameplate”. This gun weighs 5 lbs. 9 oz. The reverse of card reads: “Gun must be light as safe, very light gun desired, gun is for a very particular customer and care should be taken to make it very beautiful.” Shipped to Bob Smith, Boston, July 23, 1914. PROVENANCE: The David Herrmann Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 85-90% orig blue with wear at muzzle, with numerous light nicks & scratches. Area on bottom of bbls ahead of forend with quite a bit of thinning. Top rib has had 2 holes filled & neatly matted over to disguise. There is a very narrow gap between rib & rib extension. Receiver retains visible case colors in the protected areas & is mostly a silver hardening color. Trigger guard has 50-60% blue across bow & silver color through grip area. Beautiful stock has only minor handling marks & carries a nice smooth hand-rubbed finish. Checkering is good. There is a blank gold initial shield in toe line. Forend is sound with only some minor handling marks & carries a nice hand-rubbed finish with good checkering. Gun is tight with top lever just slightly left of center. Mechanics are crisp, ejectors strong with shiny bores. 4-35248 BDT20 (10,000-15,000)
