RARE FARROW ARMS MODEL NO. 1 SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE.

RARE FARROW ARMS MODEL NO. 1 SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN None. Cal. 32-40. Fine rare target rifle produced in very limited quantities from mid-1880’s to the early 1900’s in two models. This rifle has a 29-11/16″ oct bbl, wind gauge globe front sight, no provision for a rear sight and with a short range vernier tang sight that has a 3″ staff. The falling block action is very unique in that it is very compact with full loop lever that has the coarse knurled hammer that retracts with the breechblock and cocks on the closing stroke. Mounted with dark, checkered walnut with semi-schnable forearm and rnd knob pistol grip stock with nickel plated brass Swiss buttplate. Rifle is completely unmarked with no visible serial number. According Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms, the inventor of this rifle, W. Milton Farrow (1848-1934), “was a renowned target shooter of his day and had earlier been associated with the Marlin Firearms Company. He was responsible for several improvements on the Marlin Ballards, among them the Model 6-1/2 offhand buttplate which was named for him in Marlin advertising.” Mr. Flayderman also states “Farrow single shots are highly prized by collectors with specimens very scarce.” PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Good to very good. No orig finish remains with bbl & receiver being an overall plum brown patina with a few minor scattered spots of fine pitting. Forearm has a sliver missing from left side of bbl channel, otherwise wood is sound having been amateurishly refinished with a dark stain. Screws are lightly battered, mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-39122 JR32 (5,000-8,000)
