RARE MAYNARD MODEL 1882 IMPROVED NO. 16 DELUXE TARGET RIFLE WITH TWO BARRELS. SN 1865. Cal. Appears to be 35-30 or 35-40 Maynard & 32 Ballard Extra Long. 35 caliber bbl is 30″, oct to rnd with globe front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. Receiver has the “1882” date on right side with usual frame markings on both sides. Top tang is mounted with the rare Farrow vernier sight with multiple adjustments for aperture size and also for windage. The orig tang sight stud is still present. Mounted with highly figured checkered American walnut with semi-schnable tip forearm and pistol grip stock with nickeled brass Swiss buttplate. Trigger is checkered. The 32 caliber bbl is 28″, oct to rnd with Beech’s combination front sight and no provision for a rear sight and semi-schnable tip forearm. Neither bbl is matching numbered to receiver. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: 35 caliber bbl retains 95-96% strong orig blue with a small crack in the right ear of the forearm. Bright shiny bore. The 32 caliber bbl retains about 50% thin orig blue with a crack in the left ear of the forearm. Bright shiny bore. Receiver retains most of its lightly to moderately faded case colors, possibly an old restoration. Buttstock is sound with light handling & use marks and retains most of its orig varnish. Both forearms retain strong orig varnish. Buttplate retains most of its orig nickel turned milky. Mechanics are crisp. 4-39123 JR37 (4,000-7,000)
