RARE WURFFLEIN MID-RANGE MODEL 25 SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN 5371. Cal. 32-40. Wurfflein rifles were made in Philadelphia for a short period of time in the 1880’to 1890’s with only an estimated few thousand produced in that time in a variety of grades. These high grade rifles with special order features are quite rare. This rifle has a 27-1/2″ medium weight oct to rnd bbl with globe front sight, rear seat filled with a slot blank, top flat is after market mounted with target scope block, and top flat is hand stamped “32-40” and over the chamber area also stamped with maker’s name & address. The bore has approx. twelve shallow lands & grooves with right hand twist. The tip up action receiver is equipped with dbl set triggers and a fancy finger rest trigger guard and exposed hammer. The second “hammer”, behind the actual firing hammer, is the bbl latch. Top tang is mounted with an integral base which contains a mid-range vernier tang sight. Mounted with highly figured, checkered American walnut with a small rnd forearm that may be a period of use replacement and pistol grip buttstock that has a hard rubber grip cap, deep Schuetzen style cheekpiece and a nickeled brass Swiss buttplate. Few Wurfflein rifles survive today with orig condition and when encountered are actively pursued to complete one’s single shot collection. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. The bbl retains 95-96% orig blue, slightly thinned around breech end of bbl. Receiver retains most of its orig nickel finish. Wood is sound with usual light handling & storage marks and retains most of its orig oil finish. Dbl set triggers need adjusting, otherwise mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-39121 JR36 (6,000-10,000)
