*UNUSUAL ENGRAVED STEVENS MODEL 044-1/2 SINGLE SHOT RIFLE WITH TWO BARRELS. SN 2498. Cal. 25 RF & 22 LR. Fine special order rifle built on a 44-1/2 action with 24″ oct to rnd bbl, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight, semi-buckhorn rear sight and a locking Lyman tang sight. Receiver is beautifully engraved with a central vignette on each side of bouquets of flowers surrounded by light foliate arabesque patterns with line borders and a wide front & rear border. The screws on both sides are surrounded by rosettes and engraving extends over top three flats of receiver and down top tang. Receiver, lever, top & bottom tangs are nickel finish. Breech block is gold finish. Front flat of receiver, under the wood, is marked “044 1/2” with an additional “0” on the left front corner. Just below bbl is stamped with a small “EX”. Bottom of bbl, also under forearm, is stamped with a “0” along with the matching SN on exposed part of bbl. Top side flats of bbl over chamber area has usual Stevens markings on both bbls. The second bbl, in 22 LR, is 32″ long, oct to rnd, with globe front sight, no provision for a rear sight and mounted with target scope blocks containing a “J.W. SIDLE PHILA, PA.” tube scope with fine crosshairs, SN 2552. This bbl is not serial numbered and is mounted with a sling swivel dovetailed into bottom of bbl. Centered on top of bbl between front sight and octagonal to round transition are two additional scope block holes. Top flat of the 25 RF bbl is drilled & tapped for scope blocks with two additional small holes on bottom of bbl in front of forearm, probably for a sling swivel. Mounted with an uncheckered, unnumbered, straight grain, nicely figured American walnut buttstock with straight grip and elaborate Stevens hard rubber buttplate. Forearm is checkered highly figured American walnut with semi-schnable tip in the style of the models 55 and 56 and has the last three digits of the SN stamped on rear face. The 22 LR bbl is mounted with a long checkered, rnd forearm secured with two screws. Altogether an unusual and very rare Stevens rifle set. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. 25 RF bbl retains 97-98% strong orig factory blue and the 22 LR bbl about 95% strong orig factory blue thinning toward muzzle. Receiver retains most of its orig nickel finish with traces of gold, with strong gold on breech block. Wood is sound with buttstock retaining most of its orig oil finish. Schnable tip forearm has a couple of minor, very fine grain checks and overall retains virtually all of its orig factory finish. The long beavertail forearm shows moderate wear near the center, otherwise retains most of its orig factory finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Scope retains most of its orig factory blue with a couple of minor rust spots and has some trash on the inside with wrinkled crosshairs. 4-39130 JR39 (3,000-5,000)
