ALTERED HARPERS FERRY MISSISSIPPI RIFLE WITH INDIAN USE. Cal. .56. 27-9/16″ round bbl. Standard Harpers Ferry marks on lockplate. Dated 1854 at the tail of the lock and top of the bbl tang. The bbl and stock have been cut. The ramrod pipe has been plugged with a wood dowel. The buttplate and patchbox cover are missing and likely were used to make hide-scrapers or other tools. The front band is missing as well. There are numerous tack marks on the stock but only two tacks remain. There are also a number of square tack shanks left in the holes. This has the hallmarks of a genuine Indian-used rifle including a tremendous amount of wear on the bottom side of the forestock, consistent with long use on horseback. CONDITION: Rust/brown patina overall. Stock is badly battered, broken and repaired. Mechanically good. Ex. William O. Sweet Collection. 4-53321 (5,500-7,500)
