RARE REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK NO. 1 MID-RANGE F-GRADE SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN 7678. Cal. 40-70 Bottleneck. Fine early target rifle with 28″ medium-weight oct to rnd bbl with windgage spirit level globe front sight, no provision for a rear sight and has a mid-range vernier tang sight with 4″ staff graduated to 3,100 yards on left edge. Top flat of bbl has usual “E. REMINGTON & SONS” marking and the caliber is on bottom of bbl in front of the forearm. Mounted with highly figured French or Italian walnut with beautiful, deep fleur-de-lis checkering & carving. Forearm has a rnd horn tip with a small hole over the attaching screw area. Pistol grip stock has a triangular insert in serpentine grip with a checkered hard rubber buttplate. Serial number was observed in usual place on lower tang, bottom flat of bbl under forearm, rear face of forearm and front face of buttstock. This rifle is nearly identical to SN 7693 as pictured on p. 184 of the book Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines & Shotguns / SPORTING & TARGET RIFLES, Marcot. While these target rifles were produced in moderate numbers, they are rarely ever encountered in unaltered orig condition as found here. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 96-97% strong orig blue with some minor, light freckling over the octagon area. Receiver & trigger guard retain most of their orig case colors, lightly to moderately faded, stronger in sheltered areas. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and overall retains most of its orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a few very small scattered spots. 4-39125 JR25 (6,000-10,000)
