HISTORIC AND IMPORTANT SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE OF SGT. JOHN RYAN, CIVIL WAR VETERAN AND LITTLE BIG HORN BATTLE SURVIVOR. Cal. 45/70. SN 39027 (in the Custer SN range). 22″ rnd bbl. Strong “ESA” cartouche on the left side of the stock. The bbl band has a stacking swivel, which is correct, and the long wrist on the stock. This gun was originally purchased by Alexander Acevedo from Brian Riba through the John Ryan family around 1985. Sergeant John Ryan served with Reno’s company at the Little Big Horn and most certainly used this carbine during Ren’s prolonged defensive battle with the Sioux. Ryan later led the burial detail that interred the remains of Custer’s command after that battle. Also in that burial detail was Pvt. William O. Taylor (whose ID tag is lot 1421 in this auction). Taylor and Ryan were purportedly friends after the war, and each gave talks on their experiences with Custer and the 7th Cavalry. Ryan’s 7th Cavalry memoirs have been edited and published under the title “Ten Years With Custer” and a copy of this accompanies this lot. The illustration of Ryan with Sgt. W. P. Capes is a copy of the original photograph, which was in the William O. Taylor collection, and was originally published in Taylor’s memoirs “With Custer on the Little Big Horn” (see lot #1421). Ryan served in the famous Irish Brigade during the Civil War and among the many battles in which he saw action were 2nd Bull Run, Marye’s Heights at Fredericksburg, and the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. He was wounded three times on his 19th birthday at the battle of Ream’s Station. This item is accompanied by a signed affidavit from Alexander Acevedo stating that he bought this item from the descendents of Sargent John Ryan. A rare opportunity to acquire a historic Battle of Little Big Horn used carbine. CONDITION: 60% blue overall mixed with spots of surface rust and light to moderate pitting. Stock is fine with minor dents and scratches. Firing pin is frozen in a down position and needs to be fixed before attempting to use. Ex. Acevedo Collection. 4-53314 (15,000-30,000)
