EXTREMELY RARE PROTOTYPE OR TOOL ROOM SAMPLE REMINGTON HEPBURN NO. 3 LONG RANGE MILITARY RIFLE. SN 3328. Cal. 30-40 Krag. Rare sgl shot rifle with 30-1/4″ tapered rnd bbl, pedestal mounted dovetail front sight and musket style rear sight graduated to 125 yards on left edge. Rear sight has windage built into base with a 2-position vernier elevation adjustment. Top of bbl is roll-marked with Remington Arms Co. Ilion address and appears that the “30-40. U.S.” caliber marking engraved. Receiver is a standard No. 3 Hepburn action. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with full length forearm and short upper handguard. Front end of forearm has a blued steel cap/bayonet lug. Stock has a straight wrist with smooth steel buttplate. Forearm is secured with two bands, the upper band having a sling loop with a corresponding sling loop in buttstock. Serial number was observed in usual place on lower tang, bottom of bbl underneath forearm, inside forearm bbl channel, front face of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. No additional disassembly was effected to check for additional matching numbers. Handguard is secured at its front end by lower bbl band while rear end is secured only with a thin wire in a groove over the handguard with a corresponding groove in forearm. Accompanied by an old hand written manila tag which reads “REMINGTON-HEPBURN 30-40 / MILITARY STYLE / CAME FROM REMINGTONS / BALLISTIC LABORATORY / 1955″. Hepburn military rifles, when encountered, are usually chambered for the 44-75-520 cartridge and have a 34″ bbl. Those rifles were long range target rifles and are extremely rare. This one is more rare and may be the only rifle of its type in existence. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 98-99% glossy orig factory blue. Receiver retains virtually all of its orig factory case colors, strong on sides, fading over tangs and trigger guard. Wood is sound with handling & storage marks and retains most of its orig factory finish with buttstock being somewhat more dark than forearm. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-39126 JR27 (10,000-15,000)
