SCARCE REMINGTON NO. 3 HEPBURN GRADE E SINGLE SHOT MID-RANGE TARGET RIFLE. SN 3439. Cal. 40 2-1/2 (40-70 Sharps Straight). Beautiful mid-range target rifle with 30-1/4″ mid-weight oct to rnd bbl with windgage globe front sight, spirit level in rear seat and a mid-range vernier tang sight with 4″ staff. Top flat of bbl has usual “E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y.” address. Mounted with very nicely figured, streaky French walnut with checkered rnd forearm with Gutta Percha tip and rnd knob stock with raised side panels and checkered hard rubber buttplate. Serial number was observed in usual place on lower tang, on rear face of forearm and front face of buttstock. Serial number on bottom flat of bbl, under forearm, is “2830”. While bbl number is mismatched it is apparent that it has been in place most of the life of the rifle. This was obviously a dedicated shooter’s rifle. PROVENANCE: David D. Bottom of receiver and bottom tang retain bright case colors with trigger bow faded with spots of light rust. Breech block & hammer retain virtually all of their bright, orig high polish blue. Sight retains most of its orig strong blue. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks and retains virtually all of its fine oil finish.
