EXTREMELY RARE SHARPS MODEL 1877 OVERBAUGH SCHUETZEN RIFLE. SN 157222. Cal. Appears to be 38-40 Remington. Extremely rare target rifle made by Charles E. Overbaugh of New York City in the period 1876-1880 with only 73 having been made during that period, according to Sharps Firearms, Sellers. According to the referenced publication these rifles were special ordered and built by Overbaugh primarily for the “New York Central Schuetzen Corps as a special factory order, because the factory did not have the manpower to turn them out themselves.”. This rifle has a 30-1/4″ unmarked replacement oct bbl with Winchester windgauge globe front sight, no provision for a rear sight and a Remington style short range vernier tang sight. The orig forearm has been shortened to 2″ and is retained by a sgl screw. Bbl is mounted with a custom brass & steel palm rest with wooden ball. Buttstock is of very nicely figured American walnut with checkered deep pistol grip that has a hard rubber grip cap and a deep fluted cheekpiece on the left side a with a German silver shield inlaid in center. Buttplate is nickeled brass with medium length Schuetzen prongs and it is fitted with dbl set triggers. Sellers, in his book, also mentions that most of these rifles now have custom bbls. This exact rifle is pictured and identified by serial number on p. 252 of the referenced publication, however it is identified in caliber 32-40 which is obviously a typographical error as this rifle has not changed hands since the photograph was taken and the book printed. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains about 90% blue turning plum with some minor, light surface etching. Receiver, breech block, lockplate, lever & hammer retain most of their moderately faded orig factory case colors, with one battered screw. Stock has a crack through the top tang screw area, otherwise wood is sound with normal handling & use nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-39133 JR38 (10,000-15,000)
