SMALL TINTYPE OF GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER. Small black & white tintype in a photographer’s paper display case, 3-7/8″ high x 2-7/16″ wide with 2-1/4″ x 1-5/8″ oval image. The image depicts 2nd Lt. Custer seated on stumps with Lt. James Barroll Washington, a Confederate prisoner, who was Custer’s friend and West Point classmate. Lt. Washington was captured at The Battle of Fair Oaks, VA May 31, 1862 on which date this photograph was taken by James F. Gibson, see view K7, page 7 of CUSTER IN PHOTOGRAPHS by D. Mark Katz. This tintype is a direct copy of the original stereo view in the Library of Congress, which was also published as an album gallery card and Carte de Visite by Alexander Gardner. CONDITION: Fine. Image is slightly faded but identifiable. Photographer’s case is yellowed and lightly soiled but intact. A plastic-like covering on the photograph has bubbled in about the top 1/4 of the image. 4-53430 JR965 (100-200)
