*FINE RON LONG CUSTOM SINGLE SHOT RIFLE ON A WINCHESTER HIGH WALL ACTION. SN 67434. Cal. 32-40. All blue finish with 26″ heavy oct bbl that has a Mike Stevens windguage globe front sight and a Ron Long prototype Soule vernier tang sight. Top flat of bbl is mounted with target scope blocks and the left top flat, over the forearm is hand engraved “RON LONG, DENVER”. Mounted with very nicely checkered American walnut with large, heavy forearm and a heavy pistol grip stock with deep European style cheekpiece with Monte Carlo comb and a ram’s horn curl below the cheekpiece. Buttplate is Winchester checkered steel. Buttstock, under buttplate, is stamped “F.R. BUTLER POULTNEY, VT.” in two places, and has the date “1947”. Consignor states that this rifle was re-barreled by Mr. Long using his “Vermont chuck rifle”. Likely the orig rifle was built by Mr. Butler and consisted of shortening the upper & lower tangs and adding a vertical bar which is drilled & tapped for the draw bolt which secures the buttstock to the frame. It is likely that Mr. Butler also produced the custom lever which extends down the grip and terminates in a round drum shape with dimpled ends. Receiver is fitted with functioning single set trigger. Accompanied by a unique Ron Long custom bullet seating tool that has a color case hardened body with a machined brass 32-40 cartridge case on front with an eccentric mounted handle that actuates the piston to seat the bullet into the bore. It has a walnut & brass machined handle. Also accompanied by a Ron Long custom bored bullet mold. Mold is very similar to standard ideal style, in two halves with articulated sprue cutter, cut for a rapid taper bullet with a small flat nose and square base with five lubricating grooves. Consignor states that this is an extremely accurate rifle that has not been fired in over twelve years and that the best loads were 14.1 to 14.2 grains of IMR 4227 powder. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl & receiver retain virtually all of their fine custom blue with a very few tiny scattered spots of light surface corrosion. Stock has a small grain check back of cheekpiece through a burl area, with a couple of small chips back of receiver and a few other minor storage & handling nicks & scratches and overall retains most of what is probably Mr. Butler’s custom finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. Bullet seating tool is extremely fine, retaining most of its fine orig case colors. Mold is fine. 4-39728 JR324 (3,000-4,000)
