*GREAT GEORGE HYDE CUSTOM WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN None. Cal. 22 Hornet. Wonderful custom rifle with 30″ medium to heavy rnd bbl without provision for sights and mounted with target scope blocks. Top of bbl, between scope blocks, is hand engraved “GEORGE J HYDE, INC. NEW YORK” and the caliber is engraved on top left over chamber area. Receiver is a rare thick side/flat side Winchester high wall action with Schuetzen style dbl set triggers and a Walker style Schuetzen lever. The tang screw hole in forward part of top tang is still present. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with heavy target style forearm and palm rest with very nicely turned walnut ball. Stock has a Niedner style capped pistol grip with Monte Carlo comb and shadow cheekpiece with an aluminum Schuetzen buttplate with long prongs. Consignor’s father, personally known by this cataloger, related that he had been acquainted with George Hyde for many years and had purchased this rifle directly from him. Accompanied by a small hand written manila tag “HI-WALL SCHUETZEN / 22 HORNET MADE / BY GEORGE HYDE / BEFORE WWII ACCORDING / TO GEORGE MAN NEVER / CAME BACK FROM WAR / SO FINAL FINISHING NEVER / DONE I.E. SCREWS NEVER / FINISHED OR CHECKERING / PATTERN DECIDED”. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: As new, probably unfired. Retains virtually all of Mr. Hyde’s custom finish to both metal & wood. Bbl, receiver & lever retain strong dark blue with the lever slightly purpled. Wood has a fine oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-39132 JR33 (3,000-5,000)
