*FINE UNMARKED CUSTOM WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN None. Cal. 2R Lovell. A fine target/varmint cartridge developed in the late 1930’s by Harvey Donaldson by necking down the obsolete 25-20 sgl shot case to 22 caliber. This cartridge developed fine varmint & target velocity and accuracy in the 3,000-3,400 ft. per second range and was only superseded by the modern 222 Remington. It is one of the very few cartridges that was developed as a wildcat from a previously developed wildcat. The cartridge became so popular in the 1930’s and 40’s that Griffin & Howe custom ordered many thousands of rounds of brass when the supply of the obsolete 25-20 sgl shot ammunition ran out. This cartridge was also known as the 22-3000. This rifle, built on a standard Winchester High-Wall action, has a 29-3/8″ medium weight rnd bbl without provisions for sights and without a tang sight. Bbl is mounted with custom bbl bands that have custom scope rings mounting a Unertl 10X small tube varmint scope with an unusual horizontal cross hair and top tapered post, undoubtedly custom ordered from Unertl, or possibly simply upside-down in the tube. The front scope base is equipped with windage screws and the rear ring with horizontal and elevation adjustments. Lever is altered to a custom finger rest style with severely curved lower tang and sgl set trigger. Mounted with checkered, nicely figured American walnut with long rnd forearm and pistol grip stock that has a high comb with serpentine grip cap and sweeping cheekpiece with thin crystallized rubber pad. Bottom of stock is fitted with a custom sling base and forestock with matching diamond shaped base. Forestock is secured with a screw into a band around bbl. This is a fine custom rifle whose cartridge is easily loaded and will provide fine varmint quality accuracy. Accompanied by two full 50-rd boxes of Griffin & Howe 22-3000 new primed empties. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains 98-99% strong orig custom blue on metal with one small thin spot on left side of receiver and a few freckles of rust on lever and lower tang. Wood is sound with light handling & storage marks and retains most of its custom oil finish. Hammer does not cock on closing, otherwise mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore, crisp optics. Ammunition boxes are slightly yellowed but crisp & clean. Brass is crisp. 4-39120 JR34 (3,000-5,000)
