28 BORE J. F. SMYTHE SIDE LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH DICKSON CASE. SN 1624. Cal. 28 Bore. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 28″ Boldly patterned Damascus barrels are engraved “J. F. Smythe. Darlington & Stockton on Tees” on raised narrow concave game rib. Bbl flats have 2006 London nitro proofs for 65 mm chambers at 950 bar, as well as old London black powder proofs. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with provisional proofs and SNs. Bright polished round bar, side lever, snap action has lever on right side. Peninsula, rebounding, back action locks have short serpentine hammers. Action and lockplates are border engraved. “J. F. Smythe” is in the center of each lockplate. Blued hammers are scroll engraved. Trigger guard has SN on long tang. Dark, streaked and lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14″ over checkered horn buttplate, and features 20 LPI flat top checkering with mullered borders. There is a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.568, right -.573. Bore restrictions: left -.023, right -.023. Wall thickness: left -.018, right -.015. Drop at heel: 2-3/16″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 4 lbs. 6 oz, LOP 14″. Tall leather motor type case is embossed “Wm. Graham Lang” on front, below sliding brass lock. Interior is lined with scarlet cloth with red leather gold-embossed Dickson label. CONDITION: Fine as refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a very fine re-brown with excellent definition to pattern. Engraving is washed. Action has been polished bright, over scattered pinprick pitting. Engraving washed. Stocks retain virtually all of a rejuvenated oil finish. Checkering has been correctly re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Bores are fine, bright and shiny, with a few pits. Case leather is dark, handle a good replacement. Interior cloth is good, shows some insect damage, rubs and soiling. Label is good with some insect damage, and a bit distorted.
