Correction: SN 107873 on the receiver indicates manufacture well after 1906. Therefore Dr. Mann (or someone else) remounted his barrel sometime after 1906.

*EXTREMELY RARE POPE MADE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE FOR DR. F.W. MANN. SN 107873. Cal. 7 mm/30-40. Fine Pope rifle with 24″ medium weight rnd bbl, marked on top “STEVENS-POPE / J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.” Barrel is mounted with Mann-Niedner target scope bases and accompanied by a Winchester A5 scope with extender and mounted in Mann-Niedner color case hardened mounts that have windage & elevation adjustments. Bottom of bbl is hand stamped with initials of Dr. Mann “F.W.M.” and “7 M.M. 1906.” Front scope base is also stamped “1906”. Initial research disclosed that this number is probably the date of manufacture rather than the Pope number. Pope number 1906 is a Ballard rifle listed in their records. The high wall receiver is standard step side with Schuetzen dbl set triggers and a serpentine lever. Left side of lower tang underwood has assembly number “9741” and “XXX”. Mounted with a checkered Stevens style semi-schnable tip forearm with extensive checkering and fleur-de-lis carving. Buttstock is uncheckered, straight grain American walnut with a serpentine grip cap that has a triangular black insert and has a Winchester hard rubber buttplate. The assembly number in top tang channel of buttplate appears to be “1658”. Also accompanying are four orig cartridges probably created and loaded by Dr. Mann. Cases are military brass with orig primers that have been necked down to accommodate the 7 mm bullet and are 2.064″ long vs. the 2.314″ standard 30-40 Krag case. The inside of the case mouth has been machined to accept only the very base of the bullet which would have been sufficient to chamber the round but made for a rather delicate cartridge due to its shallow seating. Accompanied by a small hand written manila tag “WINCHESTER HI WALL / 7 M.M. 30-40 CASE MADE / BY HARRY POPE FOR / DR. MANN AND / WRITTEN UP IN HIS BOOK / THE BULLETS FLIGHT”. Dr. Franklin Weston Mann (1856-1916) was a long time friend and co-inventor with Harry M. Pope and other notable firearms gurus of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was a serious target shooter of his time and wrote a book on shooting The Bullet’s Flight from Powder to Target published in 1909. Beginning on about p. 152 of the referenced publication is information about this rifle and the testing of this experimental caliber of the 30-40 Krag cartridge case reduced to 7 mm caliber and reduced in length to 2-1/16″. There are other modifications to the case such as a 1/16″ shoulder inside the case neck which is as far as the modified jacketed soft point bullets will seat so as to have the bullet contact the lands of the bore when the cartridge is chambered. Dr. Mann states on p. 152 that on Jan. 1, 1906 he received three smokeless bbls from Mr. Pope, one of which was a 28 caliber intended for lead bullets that was never chambered and never tested. The other two, one 24″ and the other 30″ long, had 7 mm bores with 16″ twist and 1/32″ wide lands. He states that they soldered sight blocks on the “full round barrels” before finishing. On the same page he describes the reduction in length of the 30-40 Gov’t cartridge case to 2-1/16″ and later describes taking a 170 grain soft point bullet and cutting it off and forming a new point leaving it 130 grains. Page 154 shows a picture of some of the steps required to form these new cases and bullets. A copy of this book is included with this lot. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 95-96% strong orig blue and receiver about 75% blue with loss areas flaked to a medium patina. Wood is sound with forearm retaining virtually all of its orig finish and buttstock, with minor handling & storage marks, most of its cleaned orig finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Scope retains most of its custom blue finish and the mounts about all of their brilliant orig case colors. 4-39135 JR35 (10,000-15,000)
