LOT OF POLICE BADGE & PHOTOS. This lot consists of a silver shield shaped badge with an 8-pointed brass star soldered in the center. It is inscribed “TOLEDO POLICE”. The back of the badge is engraved “John Stein / Jan 3d 1872”. It has a simple pin & latch. Two cabinet sized photographs purportedly of John Stein accompany it. One view is of a bearded adult man in frock coat and vest with heavy watch chain and wearing some sort of badge on his lapel. The back of the picture is stamped “W.R. BABCOCK’S / Fine Art Gallery / Toledo, Ohio”. The other photograph appears to be a photograph of a slightly older John Stein wearing a bowler hat and high button police type frock coat, which has a similar Toledo Police badge on the left breast. The back is trademarked “F.J. TROST / Toledo, O”. Also accompanied by John Stein’s appointment as a Toledo Special Police Officer, dated July 17, 1889. CONDITION: Badge is very fine, moderately tarnished with the apparent amateur re-soldering of the center star. Photographs are slightly yellowed and lightly soiled with one being slightly cropped on the top. A somewhat scarce police item. 4-53330 JR1057 (1,000-2,000)
