*RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SINGLE SHOT MUSKET. SN 88815. Cal. 32-40. Rare Winchester musket with 32″ tapered rnd bbl, dovetailed Rocky Mtn. front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. It has blued receiver with color case hardened lever & hammer and is mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with full length forearm and straight stock with checkered steel buttplate. Forearm is secured with two bands with the front having a sling loop with no sling loop in buttstock. Bottom of forearm is grooved for a steel cleaning rod which is a replacement and there is an oval plugged hole in bottom of forearm just forward of receiver, probably from an old palm rest installation. Buttstock, under buttplate, is stamped with the number “79” which number is also inside toe of buttplate. No assembly numbers were observed on lower tang. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 95% glossy orig blue and receiver 70-75% orig blue with light cleaning scratches in the finish on both sides and on top tang. Lever, hammer & breech block retain most of their orig case colors turning silver on outer edges. Stock has a small loose sliver on left side by lower tang and a hairline at bottom rear edge of forearm, otherwise wood is sound with a gouge on left wrist and minor nicks & dings elsewhere and overall retains most of the orig factory finish on buttstock and forearm with rear end of forearm refinished during repair. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-39134 JR23 (4,500-7,500)
