RARE WINCHESTER 1885 MUSKET WITH SABER BAYONET. SN 24520. Cal. 45-70. 32″ rnd bbl, barley corn front sight, 26″ forend with nosecap, with right side bayonet lug and sling swivel, equipped with a cleaning rod. Rear sight is military, 1,000 yrd. ladder. Top of bbl is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.” adjacent receiver “45-70”. Accompanying gun is a brass handled saber bayonet. Receiver is a thick side, flat side action. Mounted with nicely figured straight grain walnut, straight grip, steel carbine buttplate, and branded “20” on right side near buttplate, inlet base with sling swivel, 4-3/8″ from toe. Accompanying gun is a Cody Firearms Museums Winchester letter identifying as 45-70 cal. musket, 32″ bbl, plain trigger, saber bayonet, received in warehouse May 1, 1888, shipped from warehouse on May 1, 1888, Order No. 6659. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains good orig blue with some toning towards brown, some minor nicks & scratches. Receiver retains 50-60% orig thinning case colors, strongest on left side and across top, blending and mixing with gray and silver patina on right side. Hammer shows dark orig case colors. Lever shows fading orig case colors blending with silver and brown patina. Stock is sound with some minor nicks & dings, and retains a professionally cleaned oil finish. Forend is sound with some minor nicks & dings, and retains a professionally cleaned oil-finish. Saber bayonet is sound with blade mixing a silver and gray patina and stamped at hilt with a “B” on one side and a crown over “C” on the other.
