LOT OF EARLY DOME TRUNK AND LEMAN KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 45. Early “H.E. Leman” full stock Kentucky rifle, marked with the maker’s name and “Lancaster PA” on the top flat with 41-1/2” octagon bbl, original front sight with a very old replacement simple rear sight. It has an unmarked lock. The stock is a light maple, without patchbox, with the remains of old applied striping and has good tack decorations on the butt and sides of the forearm. The buttplate is missing during the period of use as was common with Indian usage, they used them for scrapers, missing the ramrod. The trunk is cowhide covered, with the hair on, dome topped, 23-1/2” long x 13” wide x about 11” high. It is decoratively bound with thin leather strapping with very old brass tacks, an oval in the center of the top with tacks forming the initials “MVB”. It has a simple iron lock, missing the hasp. It has a heart shaped iron handle on one end, missing the other. CONDITION: Trunk is fair. Very worn & dry, missing about half the hair; most of the leather strap pin is intact. Hinges are rusted and need attention; otherwise the box is sound and could be restored. Rifle is very worn, having seen much hard use over its life; it has a long crack on each side of the bbl channel and is missing a sliver. It has replaced chip at the toe and a crack on the left side panel with severe burnout around the nipple. Lockplate is loose in the frame. Mechanics need attention. 4-50700 JR1136 (2,000-4,000)
