*DARNE “HORS CONCOURS” GRADE SLIDING BREECH GAME GUN. SN 14696. Cal. 12ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 27-5/8″ Monoblock bbls have high matted concave game rib, w/ feather engraving toward breech. Breech ends have 10 one inch triangles of extremely fine tight scroll. Bbl flats have 10 grade punches plus 2 “hors concours” stamps, as well as, proofs for 65mm chambers. They are also stamped “Canons Darne” and “St Etienne.” Bottoms of bbls have numerous French proof marks and are marked “quatre palmes” and “triple epreuve.” Left bbl is marked “Choke”. Right bbl has SN “14696”. Sliding breech action is beautifully relief engraved w/ acanthus fences, has 90%+ coverage of extremely fine tight relief scroll and rose bouquets. Toggle lock handle has “Darne” inset in oval w/ engraving to match rest of action. Beautifully figured and marbled French walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over leather covered pad, and features drop points, 32 LPI well executed checkering w/ mullered borders, and owners crest on heel consisting of inlaid gold “R” surmounted by separately inlaid gold crown denoting a count or earl. Sliding safety on left side of action has “F” and “S” inlaid in gold. Forend has horn tip, w/ checkering to match buttstock. Button on trigger plate to detach bbls. Bore diameter: left -.732, right -.731. Bore restrictions: left -.031, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.023, right -.025. Drop at heel: 1-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 6 lbs 7.5oz. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain most of orig blue w/ 2 rub marks 8″ from muzzles, probably from sitting in rack. Action is coin finished w/ little evidence of wear. Trigger plate shows most of case color, silvered toward forend. Trigger guard shows most of its blue. Stocks appear to have been French polished w/ some fading from sun light exposure mostly on right side. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny, w/ no visible imperfections. Action is very tight. This is the highest grade older Darne that this cataloger has seen. 4-35855 MGM104 (8,000-10,000)
