RARE DOCUMENT RECORDING 1840 LAND TRANSFER FROM CREEK INDIAN OF ALABAMA, UNDER PRES. MARTIN VAN BUREN. This document records a land transfer of about 320 acres from Creek Indian It-char-Yoholo to a William Dougherty, October 19th 1840. According to the document, It-char-Yoholo became entitled to this land under terms of a March 24, 1832 treaty under which the Creek ceded their lands to the United States government. After It-char-Yoholo’s name on the document appears a mark made in pencil, presumably by him. The document makes no mention of any compensation due him for the transfer of these lands. The signature of Martin Van Buren is secretarial, written in the same precise hand as the rest of the clerical entries. The document is sealed with the paper and wax seal of the United States General Land Office. SIZE: 17-1/2” x 11-3/4”.
