PARKER FIELD INDIAN TRADE MUSKET.

PARKER FIELD INDIAN TRADE MUSKET. Cal about 60. Exceptional Hudson Bay trade musket with 36” oct to rnd bbl, elliptical iron front sight, no provision for a rear sight, with usual proofs on the left bbl flat along with the number 24. It has a stamped seated fox over the initials “E. B.”. The same stamped seated fox and initials appear on the lockplate in front of the hammer. It is marked behind the hammer with the maker’s name and “LONDON”, and the date 1874. It is mounted in a one-piece light colored walnut stock with raised teardrop side panels and a raised teardrop panel around the top tang. It has a large iron trigger guard and long trigger and the side plate, with three screws, is a nicely detailed brass serpent. The right side of the buttstock, near the buttplate, has a small round stamp of a standing fox with the initials “HHB Co” over the top and another initial that appears to be a “B” below. This is probably the finest example of this mark on a buttstock in existence and certainly the finest this cataloguer has ever seen. It has two decorative brass guides in the ramrod channel with a plain (probably replacement) ramrod. It has a smooth brass buttplate with four screws on the face and one on the tang. CONDITION: Extremely fine, as new, probably unfired. Retains most of its original dark finish on the bbl with a light patina over the bright lock and hammer finish. Stock has a couple of minor grain checks at the buttplate, otherwise, is sound with light handling and storage marks and a couple of dings on the forestock and retains about 85% of its original varnish. Trigger guard has moderate to heavy pitting and the ramrod guides are damaged. Serpent sideplate is the finest ever examined by this cataloguer. It has very little surface wear, retaining virtually all its fine detail. Bright shiny bore. 4-51529 JR877 (4,000-7,000)
