INDIAN USED 1ST MODEL WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE.

INDIAN USED 1ST MODEL WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF. SN 4003. Standard carbine with the bbl reduced to 18-7/8” apparently during the period of use. It has full magazine with usual two bands. The front band has integral front sight that has been filed. The middle band is 1866 style and it has an 1866 style 2-position flip rear sight that has had a tiny insert installed in the short blade. The dust cover is missing and it has a staple & ring in the left side of the receiver. The stock & forearm are elaborately decorated on both sides with four different kinds of brass & iron tacks. The tacks appear to be very old and commensurate with the period of Plains Indian usage. CONDITION: No original finish remains, with the metal all being a medium gray patina. Stock has several grain checks near the buttplate and an old crack back of the top tang. Forearm has several checks near the tip and is missing two chips from the back edge. It all retains a heavy coat of old varnish, the lever lock is missing. Mechanics are fine, dark bore with pitting. 4-51526 JR895 (5,500-8,500)
